Our Legislative Agenda
The legislative agenda of Autism Speaks is to secure increased federal funding for autism research that seeks to determine the causes, prevention, treatments and cure for autism spectrum disorders, and to improve access to autism services. Autism Speaks is committed to working with other national and regional autism organizations to achieve these far-reaching goals.

THE COMBATING AUTISM ACT The Combating Autism Act (CAA) was enacted in December 2006. Now we need to secure funding ("appropriations") so that the CAA can be implemented. You can help!

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE FUNDING FOR AUTISM RESEARCH Last year, Congress appropriated $7.5 million for autism research to be financed through a biomedical research program administered by the Department of Defense. This year, we are asking Congress to provide $15 million for this research.

THE "EXPANDING THE PROMISE FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM ACT"
On March 20, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO) announced the introduction of the “Expanding the Promise for Individuals with Autism Act of 2007” (EPIAA). On April 17, a companion bill was introduced in the House by Representatives Mike Doyle (D-PA), Chris Smith (R-NJ), Eliot Engel (D-NY) and Charles "Chip" Pickering (R-MS).
